An old friend returned to the Saginaw River this morning, as the Ryba Marine Construction tug, Kimberly Joy, traveled up to the Upper River DMDF to pick up two of the barges that were being used for the Sixth Street Turning Basin dredging project. Once made up, Kimberly Joy departed the Saginaw River, headed for the lake and Ryba's next job site. Many of you will remember Kimberly Joy when she sailed for Malcolm Marine as Manitou, working many jobs over the years here on the Saginaw River. I know at least one of you will remember her before that, as U.S. Coast Guard tug Manitou (WYTM-60), commissioned in 1943 and serving during World War II on the Greenland Patrol, breaking ice to keep shipping lanes open for the allies. Definitely a great tug that will always have a special place in my heart. Photos taken on 9/17/25
